Belize Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day 2024

On Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day, October 12th, the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs joined the global community in celebrating the resilience and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

This year’s theme, "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact," emphasizes the urgent need to uphold the collective rights of these vulnerable groups, whose ancestral lands are vital for biodiversity and the preservation of cultural diversity.

Indigenous communities living in isolation, as well as those in initial contact with the outside world, exemplify a unique aspect of human diversity. Their survival is vital not just for their cultural heritage, but also for the overall health of the planet. In Belize, Indigenous Peoples have played a significant role in shaping the nation’s rich cultural landscape, environmental stewardship, and economic development. The Garifuna and Maya communities, in particular, have contributed invaluable traditional knowledge that supports

conservation, agriculture, eco-tourism, and financial growth, linking people, land, and sustainable livelihoods.

Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing Indigenous rights via a press release.

"As we commemorate Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day 2024, we honor the resilience of our Indigenous communities and recognize their invaluable contributions to our nation," she stated.

"The Ministry remains committed to ensuring their voices are heard in every decision-making process and working collaboratively to protect their rights. This is not only vital for their survival but essential for Belize's environmental conservation and cultural richness."
