Christopher Coye, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, represented Belize at a meeting of the Central American Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) held in Guatemala City. The focus of the meeting centered on the "America En El Centro: Development Program for Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic – 2024-2030."
The "America en el Centro" initiative aims to address significant regional challenges such as low productivity, social disparities, fiscal constraints, and climate vulnerability. By fostering inclusive sustainable development and enhancing economic integration, the program seeks to complement national efforts across Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. Key pillars of the initiative include boosting productivity, enhancing climate resilience, and promoting the development of women and youth through targeted investment activities.
Minister Coye underscored Belize's strategic interests during the meeting, particularly highlighting plans to develop a new logistics corridor between Central America and Southeastern Mexico through Jalacte, Belize. This initiative aims to improve market access to Southeastern Mexico and CARICOM nations, offering more efficient and cost-effective trade routes. Additionally, Belize expressed keen interest in joining the regional electricity transmission grid system (SIEPAC), foreseeing enhanced energy connectivity and cooperation across borders.
While in Guatemala City, Minister Coye seized the opportunity to engage with Mr. Francisco Lima Mena, the Secretary General of the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat (SIECA). Discussions primarily focused on Belize's aspirations to become an observer member of SIECA, a move intended to deepen participation in regional economic integration efforts. This includes collaboration on initiatives such as the Regional Master Plan 2035 on Mobility and Logistics, aimed at enhancing connectivity and infrastructure development across Central America.
The discussions and engagements at the IDB meeting highlight Belize's proactive stance in regional development initiatives, aiming to leverage strategic partnerships and infrastructure projects to drive economic growth and resilience across the region.
