Belize Hosts CARICOM Border Control Training Programme

Belize is currently hosting the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) National Border Control Officers Attachment Programme. This initiative is supported by the Eleventh European Development Fund (EDF) under the "Strengthening the Framework of CARICOM Integration" programme.

The programme focuses on improving the skills and knowledge of border officers, who play a key role in facilitating trade and travel while ensuring regional security. Amalia Mai, CEO for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Culture, highlighted the importance of border officers in her welcome address. She stated that the training would provide participants with the necessary tools to excel in their duties.

Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Marconi Leal Jr, also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the crucial role of border officials in tourism, trade, and economic growth, particularly in the wake of global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Belize is the first CARICOM member state to host this week-long programme, which will soon be held in other CARICOM nations. The initiative aims to strengthen regional cooperation and improve border control operations across member states.
