Belize Kriol Dictionary App Now Available for Free Download on Google Play

Belizeans and Kriol speakers at home and abroad now have easier access to their language, as the Belize Kriol Dictionary is officially available as a free downloadable app on the Google Play Store.

Anyone with an Android phone can simply search for Belize Kriol Dictionary, download it, and begin using it immediately. For example, entering the English word pretty brings up the Kriol spelling priti, along with sample sentences in both English and Kriol.

The development of the mobile app was made possible through the voluntary contribution of the SIL Dictionary and Lexicography Services Unit, which converted the published dictionary into a digital Android application.

In addition to the app, the Belize Kriol Dictionary remains available for free online through the Ministry of Education’s 501Academy platform, where it can also be downloaded. For those who prefer a hard copy, the dictionary can be purchased at The Angelus Press, Brodies, Cubola Productions, Kuchriments in Belmopan, Love Lotus Supermarket in Ladyville, or directly from the National Kriol Council.

The National Kriol Council expressed gratitude to the media and the public for supporting the initiative, reminding everyone that, in true Kriol spirit, “wan wan okro ful baaskit.”

The second edition of the Kriol-English/English-Kriol Dictionary was officially launched on February 12, 2025, at the Leo Bradley Library in Belize City. Belize Kriol is recognized as one of the country’s national languages and serves as the lingua franca for everyday communication across the nation.

Both the first edition (2007) and second edition (2024) were supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), and SIL International. The dictionary is published by the National Kriol Council of Belize.
