Belize Ports Positioned for Mexico Trade Boost

Belize’s ports are cost-effective gateways for goods bound for southern Mexico, Quintana Roo officials shared during a cross-border meeting that focused on investment coordination, trade access, and strengthened cooperation between both jurisdictions.

Quintana Roo’s delegation outlined how Belize’s geographic location and regional trade agreements can support wider access to CARICOM and other markets. Their assessment guided targeted discussions on coordinated investment promotion and joint production initiatives linking Belize and southern Quintana Roo.

The meeting was held on November 12 at the Corozal Free Zone conference room, where the Office of the Prime Minister and senior Government of Belize officials met with high-level representatives from the Mexican state. The session aimed to expand collaboration on trade, border management, and regional development.

Technical teams examined ways to enhance information sharing, strengthen interventions addressing gender-based violence, and coordinate beach-erosion responses in the Chetumal Bay area. They also reviewed options for introducing a border pass system to facilitate streamlined, controlled entry for residents of Mexico’s five southern states.

Both sides agreed to update two Memoranda of Understanding: one between Belize’s Ministry of Investment and Quintana Roo’s Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico, and another linking the Corozal Free Zone with the Recinto Fiscalizado Estratégico de Chetumal. These revisions aim to modernize cooperation frameworks and strengthen institutional support for cross-border commerce.

The Quintana Roo delegation included senior officials from Mexico’s foreign-relations, economic-development, and trade agencies. Belize’s delegation comprised representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Human Development, the Ministry of Immigration, the Corozal Free Zone, BELTRAIDE, and key investment and border-management units.

The session concluded with a commitment to advance joint efforts in investment promotion, trade facilitation, and coordinated development initiatives, reinforcing long-standing ties between Belize and southern Mexico.
