The Ministry of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs (MHDFSGA), in partnership with UNICEF and the National Committee for Families and Children (NCFC), has launched a national initiative to strengthen parenting support across Belize.
The program seeks to ensure that all parents and caregivers have access to coordinated, evidence-based resources that promote the healthy development of children. At the heart of this effort is the review and modernization of the 2017 Art of Parenting Guide, which will be updated with the latest child development research, proven parenting techniques, and culturally relevant practices tailored to Belizean families.
This process will pave the way for the country’s first-ever National Parenting Policy, setting key standards for parents nationwide.
Although a variety of parenting programs currently exist through government agencies, NGOs, and community groups, research has shown a lack of coordination in the approaches being used. The new project will ensure consistency and quality in parenting support services.
The first consultation, held today in Belmopan, brought together leaders and technical experts to begin shaping the framework. Participants included Hon. Thea Garcia Ramirez, Minister of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs; Dr. Olusola Oladeji, Health and Nutrition Specialist with UNICEF Belize; consultant Mrs. Sherlene Tablada; and Mrs. Maria Elena Contreras, Chair of the NCFC.
According to organizers, the consultative process will continue through September, engaging stakeholders from across districts and sectors to ensure the final policy reflects the needs and aspirations of Belizean families.
“This is a transformative investment in the future of Belize,” Minister Garcia Ramirez said. “By strengthening the foundation of the family, we are ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.”
