Belize to Introduce New Banknotes Featuring National Heroes

The Central Bank of Belize has announced that new banknotes will soon be introduced, showcasing national heroes George Price and Philip Goldson. This decision follows remarks made by Prime Minister John Briceño and aims to honor the country’s rich heritage.

The redesigned banknotes will not only pay tribute to Belize’s history but will also incorporate enhanced security features designed to combat counterfeiting. This move comes as part of the Central Bank's ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the nation’s currency while ensuring that the public has confidence in its value. The traditional image of the Queen will be replaced with the likenesses of Price and Goldson, marking a shift toward celebrating Belizean identity and pride.

George Price, known as the "Father of the Nation," played a pivotal role in Belize's path to independence and served as the country’s first Prime Minister. Philip Goldson, a key figure in the struggle for self-determination, was a prominent political leader and advocate for civil rights. Featuring their images on the currency is seen as an essential step in acknowledging their contributions to Belize's national identity.

The Central Bank assures the public that despite the changes, the value of the Belize dollar will remain unchanged. It has been pegged to the US dollar at a rate of BZ$2.00 to US$1.00 since 1976. This stability has been maintained through careful management of the country's foreign exchange reserves, ensuring that the Belize dollar remains strong in the face of global economic fluctuations.

The new designs are set to be unveiled in early 2025, with the new banknotes expected to enter circulation later that year. To ensure a smooth transition, the Central Bank will provide a period during which the public can familiarize themselves with the new notes, understanding their features and significance.

This transition also reflects broader practices seen around the world, where countries honor notable heroes by featuring their images on banknotes. Such initiatives not only celebrate national history but also foster a sense of pride and identity among citizens. The Central Bank has stated that previous changes to the currency have not impacted its value, and counterfeiting levels have remained consistently low.

In light of this announcement, the Central Bank has urged the public and media to consume information responsibly and with discernment.
