A new bilingual storybook, Benksaid Bembe, has been released by Silvaana Udz, a prominent Belize Kriol language researcher, teacher, and writer. Udz, who also contributes a weekly Kriol column to The Reporter newspaper, unveiled the book on July 31 at the Angelus Press Ltd.
Benksaid Bembe is a Kriol and English bilingual book, showcasing the Belizean Kriol language with its standard spelling system alongside an English translation. The book offers readers a playful exploration of the differences in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary between the two languages, making it an engaging read for both young adults and older readers.
Krystal Dougal, Marketing Coordinator for Angelus Press Ltd., praised the launch event held at their lobby, highlighting the press’s commitment to supporting Belizean literary contributions.
Published Belizean writer and educator Ivory Kelly commended Benksaid Bembe as “a lively, entertaining read,” noting its role in cultural preservation through its authentic Kriol expressions. Colin B. Hyde, another acclaimed writer and columnist, added that the book’s story provides unique insights and fun through the perspective of a female narrator.
The book features cover design and illustrations by David Smith of In-Awe Films, whose artwork vividly captures the essence of the “bembe” character—a term left to the reader’s interpretation.
Benksaid Bembe is now available for purchase at Angelus Press, Brodies, and other local outlets.
