BPF Breaks Through—Third Party Members Elected in Georgeville

The words "third party" and "elected" rarely appear together in Belize’s political history; however, that changed on June 29, 2025, when three members of the Belize People’s Front (BPF) were elected to the Georgeville Village Council.

Specifically, the BPF secured three of seven seats in the election, with the remaining four going to candidates affiliated with the ruling People’s United Party (PUP).

BPF’s candidate for chairperson, Carrol Sharon Davis Harrison, received 113 votes—just 16 shy of the winning candidate, PUP’s Joyce Thelma Hall, who secured 129. The three BPF-affiliated candidates who earned council seats were Delroy Diaz (132 votes), Sharen Sharett Jones (128), and Francine Nicole Vasquez (122).

While village councils are officially nonpartisan, party affiliations have increasingly influenced campaigns and outcomes. This year’s Georgeville result marked the first time a third party has secured nearly half of a village council’s composition.

In a statement shared with The Reporter, the BPF described the outcome as a significant turning point, noting that “the results are clear: Georgeville has spoken.” The party added that the election “was more than an election; it was a statement,” referencing what it sees as increasing receptiveness to alternative political voices.

BPF Leader Nancy Marin emphasized the broader implications of the outcome, stating, “The [Georgeville] community gave the BPF a real chance—neck and neck with the ruling party—and made space for true democratic diversity. We firmly believe that Georgeville will now stand as a symbol of progress and hope across Belize. The people have shown courage in embracing new leadership, grounded in service, integrity, and vision.”
