Enriquez Presses JLSC on Judge Misconduct Claim

Jeremy Enriquez has asked the Judicial and Legal Services Commission to act on his judicial-misconduct complaint against Justice Tawanda Hondora, saying months of inaction erode confidence as redistricting litigation continues to shadow the 2025 election.

Enriquez’s latest letter, dated August 11, 2025, follows correspondence sent on April 23 and May 22. He notes that on June 4 the Court of Appeal stayed orders made by Justice Hondora in his case. He also argues that the judge assigned himself to hear a related bias application, which he says compounded concerns about fairness. Enriquez indicates he will seek judicial review if the Commission does not decide within 28 days.

He frames the matter as urgent to the integrity of the administration of justice, saying unresolved allegations against a sitting High Court judge risk further public distrust. He asks that, if necessary, the issue be referred to the Belize Advisory Council.

The Office of the Chief Justice and the JLSC have acknowledged receipt of his complaint. The Commission previously indicated the case was under consideration and could be placed on a meeting agenda; as of Enriquez’s August letter, he reports no decision has been communicated.

The complaint sits against the broader dispute over electoral boundaries. Enriquez—like the Belize Peace Movement—has argued that the March 12, 2025 general election should not have proceeded without redistricting to correct malapportionment across the 31 constituencies. He maintains that delayed resolution of his court matter, and of his complaint to the JLSC, leaves key constitutional questions unsettled.
