Four individuals tragically lost their lives in a devastating road traffic accident on Sunday morning on the Phillips Goldson Highway, between miles 46 and 47 near Posito area. The deceased have been identified as Aurora Angele Chi, Gustavo Chi, Cecilio Jesus Arana and his son, Alan Alexander Arana.
The incident occurred between 7:00 am and 7:30 am, prompting an immediate response from authorities. According to initial reports received by police around 6:40 am, a Grey Mitsubishi Montero Sport with license plate OW C 24064 was found on the right-hand side of the highway facing south. The driver, Cecilio De Jesus Arana, 41 years old, was found motionless in the driver's seat. Alongside him was a Hispanic male passenger who survived with facial cuts, and a police officer, Andy Garcia, who sustained injuries including a broken right foot and facial cuts.
Approximately 11 feet away, a black Pontiac Vibes SUV was discovered with significant front-end damage. Inside, Jesus Chi, a 39-year-old Belizean teacher from Palmar Village, was trapped and unconscious with severe injuries to his knees. Gustavo Chi, who was also in the Pontiac, was found motionless in the front passenger seat. Nearby on the pavement lay Angelita Chi, a Hispanic female, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
According to investigators, the Grey Mitsubishi was headed towards Belize City while the black Pontiac was traveling in the opposite direction. The collision occurred when one of the vehicles lost control, resulting in a head-on impact. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
PC Andy Garcia, Jesus Chi, and another injured individual were rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH) via ambulance for medical treatment. Later in the day, they were transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City for further care.
