Funeral Director Jailed Over $172,000 Tax Debt

Well-known funeral director Andrew Munnings, owner of Munnings Funeral Service, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after failing to settle what the Belize Tax Service Department (BTSD) describes as a significant outstanding tax liability of $172,000.

Munnings, a young entrepreneur recognized for his role in the funeral service industry, was taken into custody following a court order issued earlier today. The BTSD secured a committal warrant after months of negotiations with Munnings reportedly failed to produce consistent payments toward the debt.

According to reports, Munnings had been making attempts to resolve the issue by hiring an accountant and retaining legal counsel. However, he struggled to keep up with the required $2,000 monthly installments. At his latest court appearance, he was ordered to pay $85,000 upfront—a sum he said he could not produce. As a result, the court directed that he serve six weeks in prison unless payment is made.

Attorney Orson Elrington, who has been advising Munnings, criticized the handling of the matter, claiming the tax assessment was flawed and the repayment demands unrealistic.

The case has triggered widespread public reaction, with many Belizeans voicing support on social media and pointing to Munnings’ longstanding contributions to the community. He is known for providing assistance to students, hurricane survivors, fire victims, and the homeless.

In light of his detention, supporters have launched a fundraising campaign to help raise the required funds.
