The Government of Belize has officially announced the relocation of the proposed Belmopan Tertiary Hospital, a strategic decision aimed at enhancing the facility’s accessibility and efficiency. This decision, endorsed by Cabinet in April 2024, follows concerns about the suitability of the initial site proposed by the University of Belize.
The original location for the hospital, situated 9 kilometers from the George Price Highway, presented several logistical challenges. The site required a lengthy and indirect route through residential neighborhoods, complicating patient access and increasing travel times. Additionally, the area lacked essential utilities such as water and electricity, which would have necessitated further investment to develop the infrastructure needed for hospital operations. These factors collectively posed significant obstacles to providing timely and effective healthcare services, particularly for residents of the Cayo District.
In contrast, the newly acquired 15-acre property offers a range of benefits that address these concerns. Its proximity to major roadways, including the George Price and Hummingbird Highways, ensures more direct and efficient access for patient transfers from both western and southern districts. The location is also near the Belmopan Airstrip, facilitating swift airlift capabilities for critical cases. The improved road connectivity not only simplifies transportation but also contributes to a more resilient healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, this site will offer better access to residents of Belmopan, whether they use public or private transportation.
The relocation decision was made following a comprehensive review and technical evaluation conducted by experts from the Ministry of Health and Wellness. These assessments confirmed that the original site would not provide timely and universal healthcare coverage.
The government also emphasizes its dedication to fiscal responsibility in this project. After evaluating the market value of both the original and new properties, a final purchase price of $6.9 million was negotiated for the new site, representing a significant reduction from the landowners’ initial asking price.
