The Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic is Belize’s most famous sporting event and has been held every year since 1928. The race attracts cyclists from across Belize as well as riders from other countries in the region.
The annual race takes place on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, and typically begins at 6:00 a.m. from Belize City. Cyclists travel along the George Price Highway to San Ignacio Town in the Cayo District, where they turn around and make the return journey to Belize City. The race covers a demanding distance of about 140 to 144 miles, testing the endurance and strategy of participating riders.
Over the years, the Cross Country Classic has grown into a national tradition, drawing thousands of spectators who line the highway and city streets to cheer on the riders. The event also includes several prize categories such as Elite, Under-23, Masters, and junior riders, with the champion earning the coveted Cross Country garland.
The parade of cyclists gives fans an opportunity to see the riders and teams before race day, building excitement for the 96th running of the historic event.
