The poles closed at 2:00 p.m. for regular voting at the ongoing United Democratic Party national leadership convention happening at Bird's Isle in Belize City.
Alternative voting will run until 3:00 p.m. after which the official tallying will commence and the winner will be announced later this evening. Reports are that over 400 delegates had voted by 1:00 p.m.
Albert Division Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton and Mesopotamia Area Representative Moses "Shyne" Barrow have both been out since voting began greeting delegates, supporters, and each other.
Barrow has enjoyed the public support of many prominent party members, such as Deputy Party Leader and current Interim Party Leader Hugo Patt, and also comes favored in some party circles as the son of former Party Leader Dean Barrow.
However, Panton has had a notable outpouring of support from the public and has also been endorsed by former Party Leader Patrick Faber. To become a leader, one of the candidates must command the majority of the votes cast by 517 delegates.
