The Public Service Union (PSU) has criticized the Briceño Administration’s recent Auditor General vacancy notice, claiming it undermines good governance and the role of financial oversight.
The PSU expressed concern over the administration’s treatment of the position, stating that the government’s decision to lower the salary to $50,000 annually diminishes the importance of the office. According to the PSU, the Auditor General’s role is critical for “safeguarding transparency, accountability, and trust in the management of public funds.”
The union emphasized that the office should be treated with the same respect as a Supreme Court Judge, citing the importance of the Auditor General’s independence and the need for proper compensation.
They described the government’s proposal as a backtrack on its Plan Belize commitments and a "burial of this administration's still-born Good Governance Motions introduced on January 11th, 2021."
PSU leaders called on all members of the National Assembly to reject what they describe as a “blatant attack on good governance and accountability.”
The union believes that offering inadequate compensation could expose the office to external pressures and political interference, undermining its role in financial oversight.
