SPARK Raises Alarm Over Repeated Horse Abuse in Belize

Animal welfare group SPARK is calling for urgent action following another disturbing case of horse abuse reported this week on Marine Parade.

Photos and reports shared with the group show children repeatedly mistreating horses, riding them on scorching cement streets, and then abandoning them in empty lots without food or water. In the latest case, one horse was found on the ground, unable to get up, while the children were seen beating it. Residents say complaints have been made many times, but no effective action has been taken to stop the abuse.

This latest incident follows several other serious cases reported earlier this year. In April, a severely malnourished and dehydrated horse was found abandoned in a drain after being left without food, water, or assistance for more than a day. Despite efforts from concerned citizens and SPARK volunteers, the horse died before help could arrive.

Around that same time, three teenagers—aged 19, 16, and 17—were detained as police investigated the theft of 15 horses from an area north of Ladyville and the cruel treatment of at least one horse. At the time, a video showing a horse being chopped several times in the head went viral. The teens were later charged with cruelty to an animal in connection with the incident.

SPARK says the repeated cases highlight the lack of proper enforcement of animal welfare laws in Belize and reflect a deeper issue of neglect toward animals. The group is demanding stricter penalties for abuse and immediate government intervention to protect vulnerable animals and prevent further suffering.
