Workshop Boosts Sheep and Goat Farming in Belize

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) and the Taiwan ICDF have teamed up to hold a “Sheep and Goat Parasite Management Workshop” aimed at improving Belize’s sheep and goat industry. The workshop took place at the University of Belize Central Farm Campus from August 5th to 7th, 2024.

The workshop was part of the Taiwan ICDF Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project Phase II). Its goal was to train extension officers, University of Belize students, and farmers in how to identify, prevent, and treat parasites that affect sheep and goats.

Mr. Daniel Juan, a lecturer from the University of Belize with over 20 years of experience in sheep and goat production and parasite management, led the training. He covered topics such as the economic impact of parasites, Haemonchosis, coccidiosis, and foot rot prevention and control.

A total of 25 people participated in the workshop. This group included 10 MAFSE extension officers, 5 sheep and goat farmers, 5 University of Belize students, and 5 technicians from the Sheep and Goat Project. These participants are now equipped with new skills and knowledge to manage parasites effectively.

The workshop is part of the ongoing collaboration between the Governments of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) to support Belizean farmers and strengthen the country’s sheep and goat industry.
