CARICOM, Commonwealth Condemn Guatemalan Incursions into Belize

Belize has received strong backing from both CARICOM and the Commonwealth after reports that Guatemalan forces illegally entered Belizean territory, hoisted their flag, and obstructed navigation on the Sarstoon River; however, both organizations urged restraint and dialogue.

Between September 10 and 13, Guatemalan Armed Forces allegedly attempted to ram a Belizean military vessel and blocked citizens from using the Sarstoon, actions described by CARICOM as flagrant violations of sovereignty. The regional body called on Guatemala to desist from aggressive maneuvers that could escalate into military conflict and endanger civilians.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General echoed this condemnation, warning that such actions threaten regional stability and undermine progress toward stronger ties. She commended Belize’s military for demonstrating professionalism and restraint, and emphasized that the international community continues to affirm Belize’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security.

Both CARICOM and the Commonwealth pressed Guatemala to honor its commitment to the International Court of Justice process, refrain from provocations, and work with Belize and the Organization of American States to create a cooperation mechanism for the Sarstoon River. They also underscored the importance of maintaining the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

The unified regional response signals broad international support for Belize as it navigates ongoing tensions over the border dispute, with the matter still pending before the ICJ.
