Panton: Young Men Must Not Be Treated as Less Than Human Under SOE
Opposition Leader Hon. Tracy Panton has cautioned against treating young men as less than human under the Government's latest State of Emergency (SOE), arguing that accountability and respect for human dignity must go hand in hand.
Panton's comments come amid the Government's latest crackdown on gang-related violence, following a series of shootings and murders that prompted authorities to declare a 30-day State of Emergency on October 31, 2026.
In a public statement, the Opposition Leader argued that emergency measures alone cannot address the underlying social and economic conditions contributing to crime and violence in Belize.
She maintained that effective policing must earn the confidence of communities while being complemented by investments in education, vocational training, employment opportunities and family support.
According to Panton, young Belizeans need meaningful opportunities to improve their circumstances and become productive members of society, rather than being defined solely by the communities or circumstances from which they come.
Her remarks place particular emphasis on the treatment of young men affected by the Government's security operations, underscoring the need to balance law enforcement with respect for fundamental human rights.
Panton also called for a different approach to political discourse, urging greater compassion and a departure from hostility and divisiveness in addressing the country's challenges.
Beyond the immediate security concerns, the Opposition Leader linked the national conversation to the economic pressures confronting Belizean households.
She pointed to the rising cost of living, which she said continues to stretch families beyond their financial limits, and called on the Government to present a clear and practical plan to ease those burdens.
Panton maintained that Belizeans are looking for solutions that will simultaneously improve public safety, address economic hardship and restore confidence in the country's future.
She concluded by reaffirming the United Democratic Party's commitment to placing people at the centre of its approach to governance.
