Belize Launches Inclusive Education Coach Training

Belize has launched a new nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening inclusive education and improving support for students with special needs.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST), in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) through the Skills for the Future Program, has begun training teachers in Inclusive Education practices and the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

The first phase of the program has brought together 55 teachers and Special Education Officers who are being trained to become certified Special and Inclusive Education Coaches. The week-long intensive training is being held at the University of Belize in Belmopan and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institute in Belize City.

Following the in-person sessions, participants will continue their professional development through online classes and mentorship programs to strengthen their skills and provide continued support in schools.

The newly trained coaches will form a national support network, helping classroom teachers better serve students with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Their role will include guiding teachers, sharing best practices, and promoting classrooms that are more accessible and inclusive.

The initiative is expected to train 500 teachers across Belize, creating a stronger foundation for equitable learning opportunities for all students. Officials say the program reflects Belize’s commitment to inclusive education and aligns with international goals that recognize education as a fundamental right.

Through the support of the IDB’s Skills for the Future Program and GPE grant funding, Belize is expanding its capacity to ensure that students with diverse learning needs receive the support required to succeed.
