Dr. Osmond Martinez won the Toledo East by-election with a significant majority, a win that political observers say reflect strong support for the People's United Party (PUP) and Martinez’s plans to boost job creation in the region.
Speaking with the media, Martinez highlighted the critical need for job creation in Toledo East. He announced plans to collaborate with a call center to hire 1,000 workers by early next year, alongside securing funding for the Punta Gorda Hospital.“First and foremost, we need to generate jobs,” Martinez underscored. “And our [Prime Minister] has said it over and over that the best social protection program is to create jobs. And as an economist, I believe that the most sustainable way to sustain an economy that can grow in a healthy way is by creating jobs.”
Prime Minister John Briceño, as speaking with the media Wednesday night, emphasized the significance of the win, noting that the people recognize the work being done by the PUP. He indicated that the election results demonstrate public approval of their governance.
The election saw high voter turnout, especially in Bella Vista Village, Martinez's hometown. Martinez acknowledged the broad base of support he received across various communities, attributing his success to the collective effort of Toledo East.
Martinez also discussed his strategy for sustainable development, focusing on climate finance and monetizing carbon credits to ensure economic growth without compromising natural resources. He stressed the importance of pursuing climate finance and sustainable development practices.
The Prime Minister expressed that the victory was a significant achievement and underscored the need to continue working hard to fulfil the ambitious goals of Plan Belize.
Martinez noted that immediate action is needed to address poverty, indicating that while celebrations are in order, the focus must shift quickly to planning and working towards lifting people out of poverty and creating a prosperous future for Toledo East.
