The Public Service Union (PSU) has declared that it will not defend public officers found guilty of misconduct or corruption, stressing that union membership must never serve as protection against accountability.

In a press release issued on October 6, 2026, the union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of public officers while making clear that such protection does not extend to shielding members from the consequences of proven wrongdoing.

The statement comes amid reports of alleged misconduct involving personnel within the Customs and Immigration Departments, including a recent criminal charge against an immigration officer accused of extortion.

While the PSU did not identify any particular officer or investigation, it acknowledged that it was monitoring the allegations and emphasized that representing an accused member should not be interpreted as condoning improper conduct.

The union explained that its responsibility is to ensure that public officers receive fair representation and due process under the laws and regulations governing the Public Service. However, it maintained that credible evidence of misconduct must result in appropriate disciplinary action.

The PSU specifically referenced Section 82(2)(e), (f), (g) and (h) of the Public Service Regulations, which addresses various forms of misconduct and conduct that may call a public officer's integrity into question.

According to the union, these provisions must be applied fairly, consistently and without exception, regardless of an officer's position or union membership.

The statement also called on government ministries and relevant authorities to investigate allegations promptly, impartially and transparently, and to take decisive action whenever misconduct is established.

At the same time, the union emphasized that accused officers must be afforded an opportunity to respond to allegations and defend themselves through established disciplinary procedures.

The union also warned that corruption and misconduct undermine public confidence in government institutions and damage the reputation of the many public officers who perform their duties honestly and diligently.

It consequently urged its membership to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and transparency, reminding officers that their conduct reflects on the wider Public Service.

The latest statement is consistent with the union's previously expressed position on public-sector accountability.
