The Government of Belize has announced that an independent investigation will be launched into the alleged kidnapping of Joseph Ryan Budna. The decision follows the submission of a Police Inquiry Report to Prime Minister John Briceño by Assistant Commissioner of Police Suzette Anderson.
The report, which has drawn significant public attention, made two key recommendations. First, that an independent investigation should be conducted to examine the incident. Second, that police officers involved in the inquiry must not make any public or media statements in order to protect the integrity of the investigation, especially if the case reaches court.
Cabinet accepted both recommendations and has referred them to the Attorney General for legal guidance on how best to implement them.
The report also made clear that there is no evidence linking Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado to the incident. As a result, Cabinet has requested that his leave of absence end and that he return to active duty immediately.
