MOHW: Positivity rate nears 30%

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has released the number of new confirmed COVID cases detected for January 11th, which shows more than 1000 positive cases recorded –increasing the positivity rate to almost 30%.

The staggering report highlights the Belize district as having the most confirmed positive cases with a total of 428. This is followed by Cayo with 241 and Orange Walk with 125.

There is little doubt among medical professionals that Omicron is making its presence known with more than 500 positive cases daily, but despite the dramatic uptick in daily cases, the daily deaths have been drastically reduced.

Unfortunately, the astronomical positive case increase comes just as primary and secondary school children return to the classroom in an effort to regain the academic and social development lost by them not being in the classroom for almost two years.

In the latter part of the release, the MOHW ardently emphasized that the most effective way to stop new COVID19 variants is by limiting the spread. They continue to encourage persons 12 years and older to get vaccinated as soon as physically possible and that if you are eligible to take a booster shot to do so as well.
