Petillo Plans Protest Over Controversial Land Purchase

Land activist Nigel Petillo plans to lead a protest on Friday against the government's $6.9 million land purchase, questioning the value, necessity, and transparency of the transaction.

“I had applied yesterday at the police department by way of a written request to the commissioner of police, requesting a permit to do this demonstration Friday from 8am to 12 noon in front of the prime minister building in Belmopan,” Petillo explained.

Petillo expressed concerns about the government's decision-making process, particularly regarding the suitability of the land and the involvement of ministers who claimed ignorance about the deal.

“I want to go a little further and say that at least four ministers are on record now stating that the experts from the health department, from the hospital, dictated that this land is better, it's more suitable, it's more fit for the hospitals,” Petillo underscored.

Petillo questioned why actual experts are not being listened to. He cited one professional who reportedly highlighted the concern that the land at which the government wishes to put the hospital is not suitable because it sits between two lands that are prone to flooding.

“It sits next to the sewer where the whole area where the residents reside right now are complaining about the stench as is,” added Petillo.
