A routine police patrol took a violent turn early Monday morning when a police corporal was shot outside Fire Nightclub, formerely known as Eruption Nighclub, near Mile 11 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
At approximately 12:50 a.m., Corporal Manuel Chub and another officer were conducting routine inspections at the well-known entertainment venue when they were alerted to a suspicious individual lingering near the roadside. The man, who was seated on a blue-and-black motorcycle without license plates, was reportedly carrying a firearm and a knife, fitting the description given to the officers.
Upon approaching the suspect and instructing him to surrender, Chub was met with gunfire as the man drew a pistol and opened fire. The suspect then fled along the highway, prompting officers from nearby units to join in pursuit. The chase escalated into a shootout on the road leading to Boom Junction.
The suspect was eventually apprehended and found in possession of a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol. Authorities recovered eight spent shell casings at the scene. During the exchange, two police vehicles sustained bullet damage.
The suspect, identified as a 36-year-old fisherman from Crooked Tree, sustained minor injuries and is currently under police guard at the hospital. Meanwhile, Corporal Chub, who was wounded in the altercation, is also hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
