Record Turnout in PUP Conventions: Thea Garcia Ramirez and David Castillo Secure Victories

Yesterday’s People's United Party (PUP) conventions saw a historic turnout, with a total of 3,029 votes cast, reflecting significant party engagement. In the Corozal Bay standard bearer contest, Thea Garcia Ramirez emerged triumphant with 1,799 votes, surpassing area representative Elvia Vega-Samos, who received 1,174 votes. Additionally, 56 votes were invalidated during the voting process.

Garcia-Ramirez, from a prominent political lineage in Northern Belize, is part of the Garcia family, which includes notable figures like former parliamentarian Gregorio Garcia and current CEO Narda Garcia. She is also the niece of Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Belize Rural Central's area representative.

Meanwhile, in Corozal North, David Castillo secured the PUP standard bearer position with 994 votes, defeating Ivan Valencia with 352 votes and Dr. Einstein Bodden with 173 votes. Castillo will now set his sights on challenging United Democratic Party (UDP) incumbent Hugo Patt in the upcoming general election.

The conventions mark a pivotal moment for the PUP, with only two contested positions announced by the ruling party, the other being in Toledo East, which is scheduled for a by-election on Wednesday.

Following her victory, Garcia-Ramirez delivered a unifying speech, calling for unity within the party to retain control of the Corozal Bay seat in the upcoming elections, echoing Castillo's aim in Corozal North.
