The Honorable Shyne documentary has soared to the top spot on Disney's Hulu, telling the compelling story of Jamal “Shyne” Barrow’s journey from a budding rap career to becoming a leader in Belizean politics, as reported by World Music Views. The nearly two-hour documentary premiered on November 18, 2024.
Directed by Marcus A. Clarke and produced in collaboration with Andscape, The Honorable Shyne chronicles Barrow's journey, beginning with his childhood in Belize and his move to Brooklyn, New York, where he signed with Bad Boy Records. The young rapper’s promising career took a sharp turn in 1999, when he was involved in a nightclub shooting, leading to a conviction and ten-year prison sentence. After serving eight years, Barrow was deported to Belize, where he embraced a new path in public service and politics.
The documentary paints a vivid picture of redemption, focusing on Shyne's transformation from a controversial music figure to a respected member of the Belizean political landscape. The film offers insights into Shyne’s complex relationships, including his contentious claims that Sean “Diddy” Combs, his former mentor, had set him up during the shooting—a claim that Combs has denied. Shyne's evolution also included changing his name to Moses Michael Levi Barrow and finding a life driven by faith, adopting Orthodox Judaism.
Featuring candid interviews with friends, family, and collaborators, such as Shyne's parents Frances Myvette and former Belizean Prime Minister Dean Barrow, as well as other music personalities, the documentary is enriched by rare footage, including a significant 2021 conversation between Shyne and Combs.
One of the documentary’s highlights centers on Shyne's most famous track, “Bad Boyz,” produced by Ez Elpee and released under Bad Boy and Arista Records in 2000. The song, blending hip-hop and reggae elements, featured reggae artist Barrington Levy and reached No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. Shyne recalled the moment Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs introduced him to the track, saying, “We need the guy that says 'wooaah.'”
Andscape Vice President Jason Aidoo, the film’s executive producer, explained the project's origin, noting that Shyne sought a trusted partner who could authentically convey his story. In 2021, after numerous production companies had tried and failed to secure the rights, Andscape succeeded, emphasizing its commitment to authenticity and quality storytelling. Aidoo described the effort of bringing the story to life as deliberate, especially with regard to including only the most essential aspects while maintaining accuracy in covering Shyne's life, from his early music career to the legal troubles with Combs.
To produce a cohesive narrative, Aidoo partnered with ColorCreative, a company co-founded by Issa Rae, Deniese Davis, and Talitha Watkins, and brought on director Marcus A. Clarke, known for his documentary “The Wizrd” on rapper Future. Together, they faced the challenge of condensing Shyne’s multifaceted life into a concise, engaging format while preserving its authenticity.
